Can't use paper trick.. any other solutions?

My R4 used to work great with my DS. I had left Pokemon Crystal (using lameboy) running for a while, but I saved it and turned it off after about an hour (I left it on, my bad, though I'm not sure this contributes to the problem?). After turning it off, I turned it back on to play a different game, and all of the sudden, I was getting the "no DS card" message.

I looked up solutions, and came across the paper trick. Unfortunately, there is not a screwdriver in my house small enough to unscrew the back. :/ I also saw the alternative to the paper trick: simply sticking a piece of paper in the slot. I tried this as well with different papers of varying bulk, and got nothing.

I checked the chip to make sure everything was still there, and it is. Nothing got deleted, and everything is accounted for.

So, are there any other solutions I can try? Or does my problem run deeper then the metals not touching?
